Caws & Claws: The Birds and Bears of Coastal Vancouver Island

Share

Canadian ornithologist, naturalist, author, and artist Dr. Rob Butler brings more than 50 years of living in harmony with the birds of this region to Caws and Claws: The Birds and Bears of Coastal Vancouver Island.

During your stay, Dr. Butler will guide you through a series of enlightening talks and excursions, sharing his deep knowledge of our region’s diverse avian life. Among the highlights is his fascinating presentation, The Enchantment of Crows, where he will reveal how these often-overlooked birds possess a complexity that science is only now beginning to uncover. He’ll also lead excursions through Bamfield’s rich habitats, where you’ll have the chance to see black bears and the rich diversity of other flora and fauna.

Rob’s research journey has also delved deep into the delicate ecology of herons, and the mesmerizing migrations of birds—a testament to the profound interconnectedness of life. As an adjunct professor of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University, Rob has shared his insights with both the scientific community and the wider public, publishing more than 150 pieces that span from rigorous scientific papers to accessible works for popular audiences. Notably, he co-wrote and co-produced two captivating films on nature and culture alongside Mike McKinlay, further enriching our understanding of the delicate balance between humans and the natural world.

A tireless advocate for nature, Rob's contributions resonate with those who desire to learn more about the mysteries of the planet.
