A Bear’s Necessities: Exploring the Interwoven World of West Coast Wildlife

Share

In the vast rainforests of British Columbia’s rugged west coast, a quiet but profound challenge is unfolding. Coastal black bears are facing a crisis as their homes—the hollowed trunks of ancient old-growth trees—are disappearing. But these mighty trees do more than provide shelter for bears; they are the heart of an ecosystem teeming with life, where every creature plays a crucial role.

A Bear’s Necessities is a 4-day featured stay that provides guests the rare opportunity to explore the complex web of west coast wildlife alongside Helen Davis, a leading expert in black bear denning, and Richard Weir, a wildlife biologist who specializes in mesocarnivores. Together, they will reveal the delicate balance of these ancient forests and how a wide array of creatures, from the largest bears to the stealthiest mid-sized predators, depend on these irreplaceable habitats.

Helen has spent decades immersed in the study of black bears and their intimate connection to the forests of Vancouver Island. For 30 years, she has been documenting the dens of black bears—more than 150 to date—many of which are found within the hollow interiors of towering old-growth trees. In 2022 Hakai Magazine created a compelling documentary of her work.

And while bears might be the stars of the show out here, they share their forest home with an entire cast of fascinating mesocarnivores—mid-sized predators that play vital roles in maintaining the health and balance of this ecosystem. Weir’s expertise extends into this world of raccoons, martens, river otters, and other mesocarnivores, who may not always capture the same attention as their larger cousins, but are no less vital to the forest’s survival.

In addition to our complete offering of all-inclusive meals, excursions, and activities during your stay, throughout A Bear’s Necessities, you will have the opportunity to hear Helen Davis and Weir share their remarkable journeys of discovery and conservation. Through guided excursions into the surrounding wilderness, you will witness firsthand the habitats that sustain these creatures, and the creatures that sustain these habitats.

Come explore the realm of coastal black bears on Vancouver’s rugged west coast, where life has flourished for millenia, and learn how every element of this ancient ecosystem is intricately connected. This compelling Featured Stay will not only open your eyes to the wonders of coastal British Columbia’s wildlife but will also invite you to take part in the ongoing story of conservation. Join us, and discover how we can help protect the fragile homes of the black bears, and the delicate balance of life that depends on these magnificent forests.
